An automatic pressure-relief feature is built into the Bearing Buddy. When
the device is full, grease will seep around the edges of the piston and into the
barrel. This prevents overfilling that can damage the inner seal. You can
manually check the grease level in your Bearing Buddy by pressing on the edge of the piston. If you can rock or move the
piston, the hub is properly filled.
If you will remove the wheel on your trailer and pull your wheel bearings
and get the outer wheel bearing part number that would help you with which
Bearing Buddy to use. The reason you have to go to such lengths to find out what
Bearing Buddy Kit you need is that there are so many different variations in
bearing/spindle/seal combinations that the only way to be sure you have the
right part is to check the equipment you have. The skf
Bearing Buddy pages also have listings on them for what bear.
Check the outer bearing and race numbers stamped into the metal of the
bearing and race in the hub. Most 6,000 pound 8 lug wheels we carry use outer
bearing # 14125A if it is an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern. If it is an 8 on 8 bolt
pattern, it may use # 506849 outer bearing. If you have the 14125A outer
bearing, you can use Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors.
In order to determine which iko bearing
buddies you need, you are going to need to remove the hubs of your trailer and
get the number off of the outer bearings. Most 6K axles have outer bearing
numbers of LM-67048, 15123, LM-67010 or 15245 which all will work with the
Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors # BB2441 that you referenced.
Bearing Buddies like # BB2441 fit very tight into a trailer hub. In order
to get them out, you will need to use a rubber mallet and persuade them out.
Once the Bearing Buddy starts to unseat from the hub you can grab it and wiggle
it out.The zerk fitting is a standard size. The fitting is threaded, and is
secured by a nut located on the inside of the bearing buddy. You should be able
to obtain a replacement zerk fitting from your local auto parts store.
Bearing buddies are installed on the hub of boat trailer axles. Original
axle hubs only have a dust cap. They are a convenience because you can lubricate
the hub bearings with a grease gun instead of taking the hub apart. They also
keep the bearings from getting wet when the trailer is in the water during
loading and unloading. "buddy bearings" allow more room for extra grease on the
bearings.
Grip the old bearing buddy with the channel lock pliers. Twist the pliers
up and down to loosen the bearing buddy. Pull the bearing buddy from the hub
using the pliers.
Remove the dust cap from the new bearing buddy. Compare the new bearing
buddy to the old one to make sure it is the correct size. The open end of the
new one should be the same size as the old one.Strike the bearing buddy as
lightly as possible with the rubber mallet to install it on the hub.
